Anne Carlisle’s gracious Federation home, set in a large English-style garden, provides luxurious accommodation in two main double bedrooms — one with an ensuite bathroom, the other with a separate adjacent private bathroom — and an additional twin room. All of Carlisle’s airy, light-filled rooms enjoy beautiful views to the garden.

The magnificent sitting room, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking a garden gazebo, is set aside for guests’ use. There are large, comfortable sofas to sink into and a warming open fire for colder evenings. Watch television or a movie, flick through a magazine or book from Anne’s collection, play the piano, and help yourself to sweet treats and the contents of a small guests’ fridge and bar. Guests are welcome to host their Melbourne friends in this lovely room, in all the comfort and privacy of a home away from home. A writing desk with telephone is set in a quiet window-lit alcove for business or personal paperwork.

Thanks to its enviable position, Carlisle makes a fine base for newcomers to Melbourne. Trams run past the front gate; a short stroll will bring you to the famous Kooyong Tennis courts, original home of the Australian Open, past bakeries and cafes to Kooyong train station, from which the city’s major attractions are easily reached. Gourmets are particularly well-served in Toorak area, which boasts a number of celebrated restaurants including Koots, France Soir and Da Noi.

Your hostess, Anne Carlisle, is an experienced caterer who has been making visitors feel at home here for over a decade, with the help, in recent years, of her chocolate Labrador Charlie. Everything about a stay at Carlisle, from the relaxed hideaway atmosphere to the deluxe breakfasts, reflects Anne’s warm personal touch, her love of cooking and her gracious hospitality.
